UV light to combat COVID-19?

Posted on August 21, 2020 by admin

Due to all the havoc that the pandemic is causing, many are continually looking for solutions to combat this virus. Although one of the best measures is the use of masks and the minimum distance of 1.5 meters, the truth is that they are always looking for alternatives to revive daily activities and the economy.

Mainly because many businesses were forced to close down due to all the restrictions that were put in place to prevent contagion, so many are trying to implement within their homes and work areas tools that allow them to return to normal, one of these technological tools is the use of ultraviolet light.

It is important to note that there are different types of ultraviolet light. Although within our homes we can have this type of light, the truth is that it belongs to one of the lower ranges, which is group A. This means that as they pertain to group A, it is not possible to eliminate bacteria, for example, within the operating rooms is used type C which is to disinfect.

A specific type of ultraviolet light would need to be used inside spaces such as businesses, homes, or at the clinic of a dentist in Tijuana to have more security.  Even though there are many utensils with ultraviolet light in the market to disinfect small everyday items, the truth is that there is still no scientific proof that these lights sold in the market work.

On the other hand, it was mentioned that type C UV light is used in operating rooms to disinfect areas. Although they can eradicate certain bacteria, there is no study indicating whether this group of UV light eliminates coronavirus. In addition to this, they are usually quite expensive lamps, so integrating them into work or home spaces would cost too much money.

Going back to the issue of ultraviolet lights inside homes or offices, they can be found in many cases inside type C websites, but they have very little power to eradicate the virus. The only thing we would get would be eliminating other bacteria and burns on the skin, which is not at all safe for everyday use, only for spaces like operating rooms.

There are other drawbacks with this type of C-light, which would be the scope they have and alter more effective restrictions. Referring to the first point, the C-light can kill the bacteria where it is directed, but not those that are farther away from where the UV light originates. It has also been mentioned that the WHO has warned against the use of this type of C-lamp as a preventive method.

If you wonder why these lights are so popular, even though there are no scientific documents to support their effectiveness, the answer is thanks to the marketing and practicalities they sell you. Mainly because it is easier to use devices where you only need to put your items in to keep them clean.

But as mentioned above, there is no evidence to verify whether there are positive effects. It is best to follow government recommendations and clean the entire house and work area thoroughly with useful substances that kill bacteria. Remember that misinformation can cause many problems, so it is best to investigate reliable sources first.
